PANDI Soon Releases Domain .biz.id for SMEs

PANDI (The Administrator for Indonesian Internet Domain) that manage the domain entity in Indonesia will release the new second level domain, .biz.id. Accordingly to the name, this domain is aimed for the business realm, especially for the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). This domain is available to use starting from the early next year. It is still waiting for PANDI to migrate its infrastructure to more reliable system.

As cited from Tempo Interaktif, the registration of .biz.id domain will be same as the .web.id registration for personal user. What you need to register are simply ID Card (KTP) and Taxpayer Identification Number (NPWP). The NPWP is a must although the small enterprises are not yet in level to pay the tax.

As a comparison, to get .co.id domain, a company should provide company legal documents that legalized it as incorporated company, firm, trading business or other forms of company. While to get .biz.id, that such legal documents is not a burden anymore. However, by now .biz.id is still limited for Indonesian users. It is different from web.id and my.id that will be available to be registered from foreign registrar.

According to the recent data, the registered domains .id (and its derivatives) are only 58 thousands from 250 thousands registered domain names in Indonesia. It means that only one forth of the registered domain in Indonesia using local domain. The rest are using global domains including the popular ones: .com, .net, and .org. By far, there are 200 million domain names registered worldwide.

I personally welcome the PANDI’s plan, but I do not feel optimistic that .biz.id can get the targeted users’ number. Let consider the global fact that .biz domain is overshadowed by .com domain for the usage of business realm domain names. Therefore, an extra socialization is needed to convince users candidate that .biz domain will be fit in to help introduce SMEs and their products in the virtual world.

However, actually I am still longing for the possibility of .id top-level domain release for public.
