Radio Remains Top Source of New Music Discovery

In America, radio remains the primary source of new music discovery for music listeners. 48% of the people surveyed said that they find new music by listening to the radio. This was revealed by Nielsen's Music 360 survey.

The survey involved 3000 people who participated online. Other than radio, 10% of listeners discover new music through friends, family, or acquaintances, and 7% through YouTube. However, when it comes to enjoying music, YouTube has become the leading source for teenagers to listen to music. 64% of American teens listen to music through YouTube. 53% also listen to the radio, while iTunes is popular with 53% and CD with 50%.

The digital music growth in the United States is marked by the fact that 51% of teenagers now purchase music digitally. Those who buy music digitally in albums or individual tracks are satisfied with what they bought. 63% of purchasers of digital albums are happy with what they bought, while 61% of those who buy individual tracks feel the same.

In this survey Nielsen attempted to discover various facts regarding the music consumers such as where and when music is being consumed, what equipments are used, which apps and services are popular, physical vs digital purchases, and the percentage of budget that flows towards music purchases.
