Ookla Net Index: the Average Download Speed in Indonesia Reached 5.3 Mbps in Early 2015
People commonly refer to Akamai’s periodical State of Internet report when they talk about internet speed in Indonesia. This time, we want to take a different point of view, as we take the internationally famous Ookla, which develops Speedtest, as our reference. On Ookla Net Index’s page, it is stated that the average download speed in Indonesia on broadband network in the beginning of this year reaches 5,3 Mbps and keeps showing an exceptional growth.
Well, actually this positive trend can be easily predicted long before. Akamai’s latest report, which was based on the data from the third quarter of 2014, showed that Indonesia had a great leap in internet quality and speed, going up 149% from the previous year’s figure and 49% from the condition in the second quarter of the same year. During that period, Indonesia enjoyed up to 3,7 Mbps of average internet speed.
Frankly speaking, Ookla Net Index placed Indonesia in the 147th position out of 197 countries around the world. The data was resulted from a series of analysis on speed test results from December 20, 2014 to January 18, 2015. There were nearly 33 million tests, with 4.446.309 of them were unique Ips, being researched.
Furthermore, the data by Ookla Net Index displays the download and upload speed in Indonesia, both via broadband and mobile. For broadband, the average download speed reached 5,3 Mbps, while the upload speed touched 3,2 Mbps. Meanwhile, 3,2 Mbps for download and 1,1 Mbps for upload are the results that the research got for mobile. Although those numbers showed a fruitful increase, Indonesia has yet deserved to be called as a significant power, as the world’s average download speed reached 21,87 Mbps.
Ookla Net Index also suggested that the median for subscription cost per Mbps per month in Indonesia was $17,27 (around Rp 217 thousand), three times more expensive than the world’s median, which was ‘only’ $5,46 (around Rp 69 thousand).
According to the report, MNC Play Media, with its FTTH technology implementation, is currently on the rise. MNC Play Media holds the first position with 51,54 Mbps of average download speed, twice the number possessed by the second and third winners.
