Aplikasi Startpage baru: uStart [+interview]

Tulisan di awal tahun ini saya mulai dengan sebuah startup baru yang beberapa hari yang lalu mengirimkan e-mail pada DailySocial dan memperkenalkan diri mereka. Startup ini bernama uStart.org.

UStart adalah sebuah aplikasi startpage yang didirikan oleh mereka yang memperkenalkan diri sebagai a small team of students dari Uni Sheffield salah satunya adalah Sébastien . UStart sendiri dilafalkan sebagai You Start, yang bagi saya merujuk pada fungsi startpage yang bisa anda desain sendiri.

Seperti juga startpage lain, semacam iGoogle, dan Netvibes, uStart pada dasarnya adalah a customizable start page web 2.0, seperti juga yang mereka jelaskan lewat e-mail pada DailySocial, ada beberapa perbedaan dengan aplikasi startpage lain yang tim uStart jelaskan, beberapa diantarnya, berbeda dengan iGoogle dan Netvibes, uStart mengembangkan widgets mereka sendiri, jadi tidak menduplikasi dari widgets aplikasi serupa, dengan alasan agar mereka bisa memberikan fungsi yang maksimal pada user uStart dan mereka juga mengembangkan fungsi membaca email yang semuanya bisa dilakukan di startpage anda, terutama untuk fungsi-fungsi standar seperti menerima email, dan mengirimkan email langsung dari halaman starpage anda, dan mengeliminir proses login, meski aplikasi ini masih memunculkan tab baru untuk melakukan semuanya aplikasi e-mail, alih-alih membukanya langsung di halaman muka uStart.

Fungsi lain, sepertinya hampir mirip dengan startpage lain seperti, integrasi dengan Twitter atau social networking, lalu membaca RSS situs yang anda ikuti, atau mangatur elemen-elemen kolom situs yang ingin anda tempatkan di halaman depan uStart anda. Serta integrasi search engines (web , images, videos, maps, news, music) dan kecepatan yang juga menjadi andalan bagi uStart untuk menarik minat para user. UStart sendiri kompatible dengan browser yang beredar di pasaran seperti Safari-Firefox-Opera-Chrome-Internet Explorer (all versions) serta tersedia juga aplikasi mobile untuk iPhone.

Saya terus terang sangat penasaran ketika pertama kali mendapat email dari uStart, dengan aplikasi startpage yang sudah ada dan semakin mengembangkan diri seperti Netvibes yang mengembangkan super RSS Wasabi, apakah sebuah startegi yang tepat untuk meluncurkan aplikasi startpage baru lagi?

Untuk menjawab pertanyaan itu dan mungkin pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang ada di benak para pembaca DailySocial, berikut kami sajikan juga wawancara singkat dengan Sébastien dari tim uStart. Selamat menikmati. :D

DailySocial[DS]: About uStart: Could you tell about the early formation from uStart, and the reason to establish this site? And why .org?

uStart[U]: At the beginning our team was working on the echanblardnext.org project which is an eMule mod. We had the idea of some kind of start page for a while and we finally came up with a feed agregator page. At first it was very static, only with javascript provided by other website. But it became more and more dynamic as we discovered the DOM and AJAX technologies.

.org is an historical thing, we always used .org as availability is better and we are not a company.

DS: About the widget: uStart develop their own widgets, is there a special reason of this? If not better if the widget can be in support of the community to get feedback from crowdsource?

U: We are developing our own widget to keep their number low. On services like iGoogle you may have one million on widgets but how many of them have the exact same purpose? By doing so, we makes it easier to quickly see what you need on your page and you have the certitude that the widget you just perfectly fits in your page.

DS: About webmail: You say that you reinvent the wheel in web mail function? Why, to tell about this superiority? No particular reason? Because of course it will deal directly with the best mail application now, Gmail.

U: Our webmail doesn't reinvent the wheel, it is designed to be part of your page and to do really basic stuff like read / write a mail quickly. Its main purpose is to skip login procedure.

DS: About the business model: Related to the first question, how do you deal with capital isue? Is there are specific business model?

U: We get money from the google search. There is not really a business model, we just make sure we have enough money to pay for servers.

DS: About the level of competition: In your previous e-mail you mentioned that you are different from startpage like Netvibes and other applications, how do you think about this competitive issue, because you would have to compete with other apps?

U: We think we are a competitive user because we remain small. Our application is light and fast and not only it gives our users a better experience but it is easier to us to make improvments very often.

DS: About real-time content: I have seen integration with Twitter and Facebook, but still lack of function, there is no re-tweet applications etc, how do you think about this?

U: Real time feature is new to ustart, we are developing one at the time any extra user needs. But sure Re-tweet is surely something that will be done in a near future

DS: About the global Internet: Are they still hold a space for new applications such as uStart? How do you interpret the condition of the Internet in 2010?

U: We think that internet has become the land of a few very popular websites that have been created not so long ago. It is an "always moving land" where you need to be at the state or art if you want to stay in the race.

DS: About the Asian market particularly Indonesia: Asia internet market is now much bigger, how do you see this opportunity? Is there any special plans on the internet users in Indonesia?

U: Unfortunately we are not really present in the asia market, this is something we want to change. But to ensure a better user experience we need t provide him the content he wants and that is why we are always looking for new sources of information. We hope that websites like your will bring interest on our project.

DS: Last, about the development: How to develop a plan uStart? When to bring the latest applications? U: The development on ustart is continuous, we bring up new functionalities almost wevery week. This week was the improvment of our Map search engine...Everything is logged in our twitter account (ustart)

UStart sendiri kini terus memperbaiki diri dan menginginkan untuk menjadi sebuah aplikasi yang memang benar-benar berfungsi sebagai 'start page',  bagaimana pendapat anda?
