Indonesia's .id Domain Name To Have 12 Registrars From September

To increase the use of Indonesia's .id domain, Indonesia Internet Domain Names Registry (PANDI) has changed its domain registration system from Single Point Registry System to Shared Registry System. In accordance to the change, PANDI has appointed 12 companies as fellow registrars for the .id domain.

CHIP noted on Tuesday that PANDI has announced the 12 companies that will assist in .id domain registration. The dozen companies were chosen from 21 who applied. They were chosen for being considered as having the best marketing concepts to increase the use of Indonesia's Internet domain.

The companies are Rumahweb, IDwebhost (Jogjacamp Indonesia), Core Mediatech, Jetcom Netindo, Jasnita Registri Indonesia, Melsa (PT Melvar Lintasusa), Jatis Mobile, CBN, Garuda Internet, Gemilang Antara, Radnet, and IM2.

These companies will begin marketing the domain from 24 September. With this new set of registrars, PANDI will act as a backup registrar until 28 September, after which, it will only accept registrations for .go.id and .mil.id domains.

Those who own .id domains will have until 31 December 2012 to transfer their registrars from PANDI to any of the other twelve.

Increasing the use of .id domain has been the goal of PANDI's 2011-2014 administration. Despite having the highest number of Internet users in Southeast Asia, there is a distinct lack of .id domains compared to Singapore's .sg and Malaysia's .my. Currently there are only 87,000 .id domains, compared to 141,000 .sg addresses and 200,000 .my addresses. PANDI aims to surpass .sg by the end of the year and become the most popular country domain in the region by the end of the following year.

.biz.id and .my.id Domains At the same time, PANDI also plans to release .biz.id and .my.id domains according to its recent blog post. The first is aimed at micro, small, and medium enterprises while the second is meant for personal registrations.

Throughout September 2012, PANDI will accept pre-registrations for the two domains. This is geared towards registered trademark owners in Indonesia as well as companies using.co.id addresses so that they can secure their own names under the new domain. The public will be able to register their addresses beginning 1 October.
