Tech in Asia Acquires Singapore Startup Blog SGE

Asia's technology blogging space has been snowballing and with the arrival of International blogs such as TheNextWeb and TechCrunch into the region, competition has been getting quite fierce. Blogs which used to be independent are now either affiliated or acquired. It doesn't matter if it's a new blog or a long-timer, it's about the execution and the best executors get to stick around. This morning, Tech in Asia announced that it has acquired Singapore's SGE for an undisclosed sum.

Founded in 2005, SGE was previously called SG Entrepreneurs, co-founded by Gwendolyn Regina Tan, Dr. Bernard Leong, and Lai Wei Chang in 2005. The blog is now run primarily by Tan and editor Terence Lee, both of whom have joined Tech in Asia effective immediately. Tech in Asia will absorb all of SGE into its site including archives of its articles.

Tech in Asia founder Willis Wee said, "We had many small coffee chats with Gwen and her team which slowly led to today's acquisition. We admire SGE’s spirit of producing quality content with a very small team. Both Gwen and Terence will certainly fit well in our company culture and we’re looking forward to working with them."

While Lee has been the backbone of the blog in recent times, there have been a number of writers from across the region that have joined SGE in the past year and it seemed like the blog was set for another chapter before today's announcement. Given today's announcement, this marks the end of the road for SGE but a stronger Tech in Asia which has only grown very rapidly since its pivot from its previous incarnation as marketing oriented blog Penn Olson back in early 2011.
