Two Indonesian Startups Were Born at the Startup Weekend in Bali

Working at indoor offices is no longer a cool way to work. That’s the unique paradigm held by Startup Weekend when they hosted an event in Bali which gathered 75 participants from 22 countries in a tropical-themed meet up. Out of 11 startups generated during the event, two of them were initiated by teams in which most of their members were Indonesians.

Hubud presented this event by inviting participants from a number of different countries, including Indonesia, Mexico, the U.S, France, Sweden, Netherlands, Australia, India, Bulgaria and Lithuania, to build a complete concept of a start in a week. Half of participants had a background in technical matters, while another half are in purely business. That being said, the committee of the event stated that Startup Weekend has promoted diversity as much more than any other event has ever done.

“We're super excited to be hosting Startup Weekend in Ubud because it's the exact kind of event we created the space for: a place for people to connect, collaborate, and learn,” Peter Wall, Hubud’s co-founder, added.

From 11 startups classified as e-commerce, crowdfunding, social network, and education platforms , two of them, Nanny Adviser and DecoShop, really caught our attention.

Let’s start with the first platform. Nanny Adviser, which was presented by Alfiah Strohal, helps parents who need to put their children at daycare . The app functions as a bridge between them and available babysitters. The app surprisingly came second after the champion, Cash for Trash.

Another Indonesian, DecoShop, is an online marketplace which allows retailers, sellers, and producers in Jakarta to sell their products on the platform. The interesting concept that this platform which was presented by Emilia Meiliana led to the Honourable Startup Award, along with another American startup, Instagator.

The unique brainstorming stage that the event had for a full week indeed gave participants a whole new dimension of working and competing. Well, who wants to miss the chance of competing with other participants from 22 countries as well as getting judged and mentored by the most prominent experts of the industry, including Mountain SEA Ventures' Managing Director Andy Zain, Momentum Green’s Founding Partner Robin Connelley, Pieter Levels (who launched 12 startups in 12 months), and Mailbird’s Co-Founder and CEO Andrea Loubier.
