GrabTaxi and the World Bank Assist Governments in Solving Traffic Issues

GrabTaxi collaborates with the World Bank in solving the traffic of public transportation issues as well as improving the traffic security for people in Southeast Asia. They plan to provide free OpenTraffic platform to the government of several countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Through OpenTraffic, GrabTaxi attempts on serving the facility of monitoring the traffic condition real-time as well as collecting related data, such as the trip duration, to governments. The data may then be taken into the governments’ consideration when they design traffic-related policies.

The partnership is planned to be started in a number of cities including Cebu, Manila, Davao City, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Jakarta.

GrabTaxi’s Founder and CEO Anthony Tan stated in his press release, “It’s an honor for us to collaborate with the World Bank in revolutionizing the public transportation in Southeast Asia. We are a social startup and this partnership will get us closer to our social mission which is to improve the life of our drivers and passengers significantly – and later to go hand in hand with the World Bank and local governments to improve the security and safety on streets in the cities where we operate.”

This OpenTraffic initiative will later be led by the World Bank’s Transport & ICT Global Practice. The goal would be to create a safer, cleaner, and more affordable transportation system which can solve the jams, facilitate the access to jobs, and reduce the consumption of fuel for transportation.

The aforementioned tech and data management are expected to help governments in mapping the trip pattern and user’s needs as well as improving the quality and efficiency of transportation solutions.
